More London Sanitation

Talking about sanitation at the WSUP event, mentioning the Sewer Gas Lamp, I was also reminded of other reminders of London's sanitation past - just up from the gas lamp in the street alongside the Savoy Hotel is Cliffords Inn Passage with its 'Pissing Plates', reportedly designed to stop gentlemen urinating against the passageway wall because the plates direct the urine back onto one's trousers.
I haven't tested how effective it is!

And then about half a mile to the west, in Soho, there is a house that is very occasionally open to the public which has the last remaining 'pit latrines' in London. They are unused now of course - there was one in the backyard for the owners of the house and the one shown here, just off the basement kitchen, which is built under the pavement of Dean Street above.
